Third graders learned about street artist Kelsey Montague. Combined with the hashtag what lifts you- her artwork showing angel wings is a strong statement about positivity. Yet, at the same time it also engages the public with social media like instagram. People take a picture of themselves in the artwork and post what inspires them in their lives. The wings are filled with smaller images and stories that help make up the bigger picture.
Students began by brainstorming all the things that lift them up or bring them joy, like foods they like, activities they do, places they've been, toys they play with...Once they had their ideas they designed their own pair of wings and used the images from their brainstorm to fill them. Finally, we added patterns to fill in the areas around our images.

Line Paintings
Vocabulary Day!
I love dressing up and creating costumes! Vocabulary Day is always so fun- I love to see everyone getting into the creative spirit. In the past I've dressed as a self-portrait, secondary colors and cool colors. This year I decided to dress as a collage. I taped cut pieces of paper all over me, created a paper wig and carried an over-sized pair of scissors with my word and definition....I'm already brainstorming ideas for next year!
Harold and The Purple Crayon
Kindergarten began the year by learning about line. We learned the poem Larry the Line which is about a snake who can twist his body into all different kind of lines. We even got a visit from Larry himself! After practicing drawing some lines, like vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curvy, spiral and zig zag, we read the story Harold and the Purple Crayon. We noticed how Harold used all the lines we just discussed to create his pictures. We also discussed how Harold did not draw on paper but right in the air! Students then used purple yarn dipped in glue to create their own lines that hang in the air!
Dot Day
Dot Day was a great success! Students, teachers, and even some parents created quilt squares. We discussed unity, variety and symmetry while designing our circle. Circles were then cut into quarters and arranged on a white square by each artist. All the squares were then glued together to create out school quilt. I love the result! We had enough artists to create 3 quilts- displayed on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors.
I decorated the hallways with dots...
Teachers and students showed off their dots!
even the windows got the dot treatment!

Are you ready for Dot Day??!!!
Dot Day is usually celebrated on September 15th (because that's when the book The Dot was published). However, I decided to push our celebration back this year in order to give us the time to discuss Dot Day and create our own amazing dots! This years celebration will take place on SEPTEMBER 23rd at the Garfield School. How does one celebrate Dot Day you ask? On this day (and really every day in the art room) we celebrate the main ideas from the story: bravery, creativity, collaboration, and making your mark on the world. Students will need to wear their uniforms on this day but can accessorize with dots (like dotted socks, scarves, shoes, bows, headbands, ties and bow ties. Students have already started making their dots and this year parents and teachers were invited to get in on the fun as well by creating their own dots too. Check back soon to see our finished project...until then- Happy Dot Day!!!!

SPRING P.A.R.T.Y.!!!!!
Every year we celebrate art and music in Revere with our district wide art show. The event used to be held in March (which is youth art month) and was called March on the Arts. Last year because of all the snow, we moved it to May and changed the name to May the Arts Be With You. This year because of all the testing in May we had to move it to April-- which required yet another name change! The event was renamed Spring P.A.R.T.Y. The art and music teachers work very hard not only to put on this show, but also to make it better and better each year. I'm really proud of what the event has become!
P.A.R.T.Y. guests had the opportunity to write some fan mail to their favorite artists! At the end of the show letters were sorted and will be delivered to students at their respective schools.
For anyone who has never been, it's really a lot of fun and I hope these pictures give you some incentive to join us next year!! The art is amazing, there are musical performances in different locations throughout the event, we run a bake sale, and this year we added a photo booth, art activities (which we hope to expand in the future) and fan letters. I'm exhausted from all the work but it was well worth it. I love the excitement on my students faces when I tell them their art has been chosen to be featured in the show. This year I also presented students with awards for outstanding artwork (thanks for your help printing these Mrs. Ryan).
Students came down the morning of the show to have their photo taken with their awards
Some friends missed the announcement in the morning so I took their photo separately:)
We had a bunch of props for people to pose with against our backdrop. Who doesn't love a good selfie? Next year we'll have to hashtag it so we can see everyone's fun photos....
Art Teachers drew out a variety of frames for our Selfie Station
The art on display was simply amazing. I was especially impressed with the work from the High School...
Guests came into the event through the cafeteria which held the bake sale and some of our musical performances- including our own Garfield Glee Club!
The Glee Club getting ready
What a great performance!!
Upstairs in the library there were more musical performances and sculptures on display
Our drawing station also took place in this space
The hallway was packed with people- what a great turnout!!
The Junkyard band performed in the library along with Mr. Gasper (their art teacher) who helped them create all their instruments from recycled materials. Awesome! (video to come)
The evening closed with a great performance in the auditorium by all our amazing music teachers; including our own Mrs. Keplin- who stole the show!(video to come)
